Need more workspace in your kitchen? Replace a lower cabinet drawer with a pull-out cutting board (figure A).

    • The original hardware and drawer front can be used to make the board.

    • Start by measuring the drawer to get the dimensions of the base then cut the plywood to size.

    • Mark the position of the cutting surface. To keep it in place, half-inch hardwood dowels can be cut for a frame. Leaving the front edge open will give you a nice way to grab the board (figure B).

    • The tracking from the old drawer can be reused on the new wood base.

    • The original drawer front can be also be re-used, first by giving it a quick cleaning.

    • Wood putty can fill any screw holes. Then sanding and painting will smooth the surface.

    • Add hinges and magnets (figure C) to hold it in place and in no time, you’ll have a more useable workspace – a pull-out cutting board (figure D).

    • To save time, buy a custom-sized cutting board already attached to slides.

    • Position the brackets so that the top angles point away from the cutting board; this will make screwing it in place much easier.
