  • Paper Bangles
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-208

    PHOTO

The paper bangle (elevated, right) can be created from many different types of handmade papers and beads to create totally different looks.
Self-proclaimed papivore and guest artist Sandi Reinke shares her technique for creating paper bangles.

    Materials:

    1 sheet sage handmade paper
1 package of Tiger's eye shells
    1 paper core 3" diameter
    1 bottle of Liquid Laminate
    1 bottle of Foam Finish
1 bottle acrylic sealer, high gloss
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
    Craft knife
    Pencil
    Small paint brushes
Serrated bread knife or small hack saw

    1. Decide how wide you want your bangles to be, then measure and mark your core in several places with pencil. Draw a pencil line in to connect your marks. (The following instructions are for a 1" width.)

    2. Score the pencil line around the core with the craft knife, then saw the 1" piece from the core.

    3. Stir the Foam Finish to liquefy it, then apply a coat to both the inside and outside of the 1" "bangle". Allow to dry for about an hour, then gently sand any rough edges. You can apply as many coats as desired to build up "bulk" -- but allow to dry between each coat.

    4. Cut a strip of the sage handmade paper 10-1/2" long x 2-1/2" wide.

    5. Apply a coat of the Liquid Laminate to both the inside and outside of your bangle, and also a generous coat of the laminate to the piece of sage paper.

    6. Place your bangle onto the sage paper and "roll" the paper around the bangle, clipping the edges and folding the paper to the inside of the bangle. The paper will be very pliable and can almost be "molded" into place. Apply another coat of laminate and allow to dry.

    7. If desired you can apply another layer of paper to the bangle, another color to the inside, etc.
When dry, apply a coat of the acrylic high gloss sealer and allow to dry.

    8. Hot glue the tiger eye beads evenly around the outer edge of the bangle.

    9. Apply a final coat of laminate to the bangle to add gloss and to securely anchor the Tiger Eyes in place.

    10. After the bangle is completely dry, if a shinier surface is desired more coats of the high gloss acrylic sealer can be applied.
