Sewing guru Sandra Betzina shares a great idea for cloth "story stones," a fun project invented by sewing author Jan Saunders. Then DIY Crafts host Mary Lyon shows how to create a quick and easy no-sew version of these soft, colorful shapes. Materials: Felt in assorted colors Cookie cutters (animals, stars, letters, etc.) or traceable geometric objects (lids , etc.) Marker Scissors Glue Velcro squares Sewing machine (optional - for use with geometric shapes) Batting (optional - for use with geometric shapes) Safety Note: - Make sure your story stones pass the choking test! If they're small enough to be fitted into a plastic film canister with the lid closed, they're too small - re-cut in a larger size.
Place cookie cutter or geometric shape on felt and carefully trace around it using a marker (figure A). Use scissors to cut out the shape (figure B). If using batting, cut out a duplicate geometric shape and use sewing machine to embroider a design on each piece. Turn pieces with wrong sides together, fill with batting and sew together around the edges (figure C). Trim off any excess batting around the edges. For shapes made from cookie cutter outlines, simply use glue to attach each shape to a larger felt "backing" - a piece of felt in a contrasting color, slightly larger than the original shape (figure D). Glue a square of Velcro to the backing of each shape (figure E). Use a large square of uncut felt as a "storyboard" where individual shapes can be attached in various arrangements to form pictorial stories (figure F). Hang the felt storyboard on a wall or bulletin board if desired.
