Author and woodworker Pat Spielman explains how to make a simple puzzle, using a scroll saw. Materials:
Scroll saw Pattern (Patrick Spielman has many publications containing patterns; children's easy coloring books are also a good source.) Removable spray adhesive, available at art-supply stores Two pieces of 1/4" plywood large enough to fit the pattern and form a frame (one piece for the top, one piece for the bottom) Sandpaper C clamps Acrylic paint Brushes Tack cloth - Make a copy of the puzzle pattern. Spray the back of the pattern with temporary adhesive glue, and place it, centered, onto the top piece of wood.
- Drill a hole near the outside edge of the design large enough to accommodate the saw blade.
- Unhook the blade, thread it through the hole, and reattach the blade.
- Cut around the outside of the design with one continuous cut.
- Stop the saw and remove the center cut. Next, unhook the blade so you can remove the outside part of the wood. Reattach the blade.
- Lightly sand the edges. Apply wood glue to the bottom, turn it upside down, and position it on the second piece of wood (figure A).
- Secure the two pieces of wood together with C clamps. Or if you don't have C clamps, place bricks or heavy books on top and wrap tightly with tape. Set aside to dry.
- Cut out the remainder of the pieces from the center cut.
- Remove the paper pattern from all the wood pieces; sand.
- Wipe with a tack cloth, and paint the pieces with acrylic paint (figure B ).
