    Great Gourd Arrangements

    Materials:

    variety of gourds
piece of wood or large log slice
    scissors
    contact cement
    moss

Safety Alert: Depending on the size of the gourd arrangement, you may be using a large amount of contact cement. Make sure to follow all instructions for the adhesive and to work in a well-ventilated area.

    • Collect several gourds, miniature pumpkins and squashes. Choose gourds of various sizes, shapes and colors
      (figure A).

    • Michele Beschen used a large log slice as the base for her gourd arrangement. Look for these at garden stores and nursery centers.

    • Remove any dust, dirt or grime from the gourds.

    • Choose pieces with flat tops to build the bottom layer of the arrangement. Trim down stems so the next layer will rest securely (figure B). Arrange the bottom layer of gourds on the base and secure with contact adhesive (figure C).

    • Continue to build the arrangement, gluing pieces to each other and the level below. Vary the orientation, laying some pieces on their sides or even upside down (figure D).

    • Once all the gourds are glued in position, let the glue dry according to package instructions.

    • Add some shine with a few coats of clear gloss polyurethane or lacquer, if desired.

    • Finish off the piece with some bagged moss such as Spanish moss or reindeer moss. Different types of moss are available at hobby shops. Glue the moss into place, pressing it gently into the glue so that it stays fluffy.

    • Give the arrangement even more height and texture by adding some grass or other dried elements.
