Sea sponge Rags Bowl (to mix water and paint) Sandpaper Paintbrush - Prepare the pots by wiping them with a wet rag, then prime with a water-based enamel primer.
- Mix the color you want to be the wash on the pots (2 parts paint to 1 part water).
- Brush the paint on (figure A), making sure all strokes go in the same direction -- usually around the rim of the pot.
- Let dry about 1/2 hour.
- Optional step: Stencil on a pattern or design (figure B). Let dry.
- Sand the edges of the pot to give it a distressed look.
- Place plant of your choice into the pot.
Tips: - In decorating garden holders of any kind, it's nice to have a theme. A color theme, for instance, is good if you have a small garden you want to visually enlarge or a large garden you want to warm up.
- Bright colors such as red and yellow tend to jump forward and make things appear closer. They are vibrant and exciting forces in a garden. In contrast, darker colors such as blues and greens are receding colors. If you want to make your garden look larger, you may want to plant trees and shrubs as opposed to brightly colored flowers.
- In this project, the guest uses colored pots to change the "theme" of the garden. Terra-cotta pots are great for this because they take to paint washes so well, and they patina beautifully over time. All water-based environmentally friendly products are used so as to keep the project simple and healthful.
