Los Dias de Muerto -- the Mexican Day of the Dead -- is almost carnaval-like in spirit. Colorful costumes, festivals and decorations -- like this altar -- are part of ritual the welcoming of the spirits of those who have passed.

The Day of the Dead is an important memorial day to honor those who have passed away. Artist and photographer Masako Takahashi creates a small Day of the Dead altar with just a few materials.

    Materials:

Day of the Dead boxed altar with skeleton angel
    Personal photos
    Assorted candles
A variety of flowers (although marigolds are traditional)
    Various paper decorations

    1. Display altar on a mantel or shelf or in a niche.

    2. Place photo or figure representing the honored in the center of the altar.

    3. Decorate with candles, flowers and cut-paper decorations. In addition, commemorate the dead with favorite food, beverages or tokens.
