For centuries, tortoiseshell has been used to embellish home accents. This faux finish -- capturing all the warmth of real tortoiseshell -- can be achieved with glass paint.

    Figure A

A handpainted technique can easily and inexpensively create the look of tortoiseshell. DIY Crafts host demonstrates.

    Materials:

    Clear hurricane globe
    Alcohol
    Glass cleaner
Yellow and orange stained-glass spray paint
    Paint palette
    Dark brown translucent glass paint
    Golden yellow translucent glass paint
Amber or burnt orange translucent glass paint
    Black translucent glass paint
    Iridescent gold glass paint
Sponcer sponges or bamboo skewer and cotton ball
    Alcohol
    Glass paint remover
    Pillar candles
    Candle tray

    1. Clean surface of glass with glass cleaner, then wipe with alcohol to remove any residue.

    2. Spray the entire surface of the glass with a very light coat of the yellow glass spray paint and allow to dry.

    3. Repeat using orange spray. Apply very lightly and intermittently to create a mottled base color.

    4. Allow to dry completely before pouring a small amount of each of the glass paint colors onto a palette. Using the spouncer sponges or cotton-tipped bamboo skewer, dip very lightly into the various colors. Create groupings of color on the inside of the hurricane glass by lightly pressing the spouncer onto the glass and dragging it slightly (figure A).

    5. Allow these colors to dry completely and add more if needed.

    6. Finally, after additional colors have dried, place the hurricane over a candle on the tray.
