Stationery Box From "Embellish This!" episode DEMB-208

Host Dena Fishbein shows you how to make a stationery box that will keep all your letters organized with elegance.

Materials --

Velvet fabric of your choice
Crazy quilt fabric
Polyester batting
Binder clips
Single-ply chip board
Fabri-Tac
Scissors
Gold Trim
1 yd. of black and white checked 3/4" wide ribbon
Black felt
Ribbon tape measure
Pencil

Note: Vintage fabric and trims were used in this project but modern fabrics can be easily substituted for a similar look.

1. Measure the height of sides of the box over the edge (figure A), the inside height of the box , and the length around the box. Add 1-1/2" to this number. Cut a strip of velvet to fit measurements.

2. Start by applying glue to an outside corner. Place the fabric evenly over the corner (some fabric will be tucked underneath the box and the rest will be inside the box). Smooth the fabric down with your fingers (figure B) as you go. Continue gluing the velvet strip to the outside of the box and secure with clips as needed. Just work all the way around the box a little at a time. Don't worry if the edges on the inside are not perfect (they will be covered), you just want to make sure the fabric is smooth on the sides of the box.

   Tip: A heavier fabric, like velvet, works best because you can use a lot of glue and it won't seep through.

3. When the sides of the box are dry, glue the inside edge of the velvet in place, being careful to pleat the corners. When this section is secure, glue the raw edges to the inside bottom of the box.

4. After the sides (inside and out) and the top have been glued, turn the box over. Make a few snips at each of the corners to make it easier to glue (figure C) them down. Continue gluing the edge down.

5. Trace the wood box onto the chipboard with a pencil. Under cut and set aside. This is the template for the inside of the box. Place it inside the box to make sure it fits and if it is a little snug, clip it a little more.

6. Cut a piece of the crazy quilt 1-1/2" larger than the template. Cut a piece of batting slightly smaller than the template. Attach the batting to the template with a few dabs of glue (figure D).

   Note: Use quilt batting, not loose batting for this project.

7. Place the crazy quilt fabric evenly on top of the batting and then turn it over. Wrap the raw edges underneath the chipboard, take tiny snips in the fabric at the four corners and secure with glue. Let dry.

8. Fold the black and white ribbon in half to find the center point. Place glue in the center of the box horizontally and center the ribbon over the glue (figure E) and press it down.

9. Place a little glue on the bottom of the quilt covered board and then place it inside the box (pretty side up) and press firmly to secure.

10. Cut a piece of gold trim to wrap around the center of the outside of the box and secure with glue.

11. Cut a piece of black felt to fit underneath the box and glue in place (figure F).

12. Place stationery items of your choice with a pen, etc. inside the box. This would be great to gift for a friend, and it would look great in your home office.
