    1. Make a pattern for the fabric to cover the journal out of vellum.

Note: When cutting your fabric, be sure to add 1" all the way around.

    2. Place the vellum pattern on the fabric for optimum placement of the fabric's image on the journal cover (figure A). Cut out the fabric.

    3. Spray a heavy layer of glue on the wrong side of the fabric.

Safety Tip: Use spray adhesive outside in a well-ventilated area.

    4. Set the book on the glued fabric and smooth the fabric over the journal.

    5. Cut 1/8" off of all corners. Clip a small section at the spine (figure B) on both sides of the book.

    6. Fold the edges of the fabric onto the insides of the covers. Take a pair of scissors and poke the material at the spine inside (figure C).

    7. Cut and lay the two strips of ribbon the same size at the center of the inside front and back covers and glue in place to make ties for closing the book. Glue the strip on about an inch in the middle of the covers, making sure the right side is glued down.

    8. Spread Fabri-Tac with a flat stick on the inside of the covers and press the first page onto the inside covers to hide the fabric ends.

Note: Use a tongue depressor to spread glue evenly across the entire page.

    9. Cut a small rectangle of suede with the pinking shears.

    10. Glue the suede onto the cover and write a message with the gold paint (figure D).

    11. Highlight elements of the fabric with the gold paint.
